[Flower Paintings]
After studying the famous female artist Georgia O'Keeffe, 5th graders started working on their own large scale flower paintings. Students focused on color and detail as they zoomed into make their flowers gigantic!

[Ink Splatter Monsters]

This week, the artist Stefan Bucher inspired students. Bucher's artwork, featured on his website, www.dailymonster.com, is created by using air to blow ink into a unique splatter shape, then using his imagination, he transforms the splatter into a silly monster! The students really enjoyed watching Bucher create his artwork, and really got into the spontaneous aspect of this project!!

[Doodle 4 Google Contest]

[Mehndi Inspired Hand Designs]

North Side Elementary is an incredible place to learn because of the diverse backgrounds of all the students. For this lesson, the students were inspired by the students’ at North Side whose cultural backgrounds come from countries in Southern Asia such as India, and Pakistan, and also Northern Africa. We had a great long discussion about the cultural tradition of Mehndi Hand Designs with each class, learning from some students’ personal experience with the cultural tradition, and also looking at many pictures! The fifth graders then used the Mehndi hand designs as their inspiration for their own warm and cool colored patterned hand designs.

[Wish Sculpture]

 Each fifth grader at North Side created 3 or more scrolls that contained their hopes, wishes, dreams, and goals. Each scroll contained something unique. Some were heartfelt, others fun and silly. Some students wished for an A in math, others were dreaming to be a star NFL football player, some wished for good fortune for themselves and others, and a few students even wished for super powers! All the scrolls were then combined together one by one group by group to create a class sculpture. Miss Morningstar then combined all class sculptures together to make one 5th grade sculpture of Wishes and Dreams! Measuring about 4 feet high and 2.5 feet wide, it now hangs in Miss Morningstar's art room!

[Gargoyles]

After discussing the Legend of the Gargoyle, and learning about the creatures' role in the art world, the 5th grade students designed their own gargoyles using at least two different kinds of animals for inspiration. After much experimentation, blobs of clay were transformed into wacky, frightening, and cute gargoyles of all shapes and sizes!
