Franz Kline Abstract Painting

Materials
12X16 , 140 pound watercolor paper
Acrylic paint
Semi gloss acrylic medium
Frogtape for delicate surfaces (yellow)
Brushes
Pencils
Objectives:
- Gain an understanding and awareness of Franz Kline’s art and process
- Understand neutral colors
- Experiment with creating different kinds of lines and marks
- Become familiar with acrylic paint
- Create an interesting composition using experimental abstract painting
- Demonstrate acrylic techniques and clean up
Procedure:
- Discuss the art and process of Franz Kline
- Tape an even border around (2) 12x18 paper with frog tape
- Sketch 8 designs on scrap paper using black acrylic paint. Emphasize diagonal lines, thick to thin lines, positive and negative space
- Lightly sketch your best 2 designs to WC papers
- Using a flat brush, paint black lines on WC paper, keeping edges rough
- Paint shapes, using neutral colors, and some complementary colors mixed to create neutrals
- Mix black acrylic thin enough to add additional Offset Calligraphy along with drips and splatters of paint
- Let dry overnight, then add 1 coat of semi gloss acrylic medium to seal surface
- Remove tape and enjoy!
