Franz Kline Abstract Painting

    • Essential Question - Understand how the choice of tool, media and expressive quality of a mark can affect the personal style of an artist

Materials

12X16 , 140 pound watercolor paper

Acrylic paint

Semi gloss acrylic medium

Frogtape for delicate surfaces (yellow)

Brushes

Pencils

 

Objectives:

    • Gain an understanding and awareness of Franz Kline’s art and process
    • Understand neutral colors
    • Experiment with creating different kinds of lines and marks
    • Become familiar with acrylic paint
    • Create an interesting composition using experimental abstract painting
    • Demonstrate  acrylic techniques and clean up

 

Procedure:

    • Discuss the art and process of Franz Kline
    • Tape an even border around (2) 12x18 paper with frog tape
    • Sketch 8 designs on scrap paper using black acrylic paint. Emphasize diagonal lines, thick to thin lines, positive and negative space
    • Lightly sketch your best 2 designs to WC papers
    • Using a flat brush, paint black lines on WC paper, keeping edges rough
    • Paint shapes, using neutral colors, and some complementary colors mixed to create neutrals
    • Mix black acrylic thin enough to add additional Offset Calligraphy along with drips and splatters of paint
    • Let dry overnight, then add 1 coat of semi gloss acrylic medium to seal surface
    • Remove tape and enjoy!
