First Contact: Pre-service teachers meet special populations is a description of a cooperative field experience that I coordinated between our Indiana University art education students and a Life Skills class of students with physical and cognitive disabilities. This early intervention with future teachers was designed to introduce them to art-making adaptations and strategies while working with actual students with a variety of special needs.
Rather than rely purely on theory and class-simulations, the goal of this experience was to become familiar with students as real human beings. Presentation at 2010 NAEA Conference, Baltimore, MD.
