InTASC Standard #1- Learner Development

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

Description: Medieval Castles for Third Grade

I created a lesson plan for Third Grade that I developed for their Middle Ages Unit that reflects learner development. This lesson plan encourages thinking critically about culture and the presence of art throughout history by exploring geometric forms and creating their own drawings of a castle that reflects the Medival Times. My lesson plan address variations of learning by utilizing auditory and visual teaching by watching videos and viewing PowerPoints as well as kinesthetic learning by having students work with foam blocks and create three-dimensional structures that resememble a castle as a table group.

Reflection

Children's cognitive development vary greatly, and I believe it is crucial to develop lessons that are engaging and challenging yet developmentally appropriate in order to foster problem-solving and critical thinking without causing frustration. Third graders are at the schematic stage of drawing which means they are exploring space and exploring how to arrange objects in a meaningful manner. Students at this age are investigating how geometric shapes and forms are used in the real world, so my lesson allows the students to explore how forms make up human-made environments as well as natural environments. Students in this age group are able to learn about people who live elsewhere in the world, so learning about the Middle Ages is beneficial for their level of cognitive development. Along with addressing variations in cognitive development, my lesson plan offers differentiated and adapted instruction for the students who need it such as providing templates of castles to reference, and drawing along with students step-by-step.
