Inner & Outer Worlds

Silhouette portraiture was an early contributor to the invention of photography and dates back to ~600 BC with the Corinthians in Greece, who used silhouettes to illustrate human culture on pottery.

Students study the history of silhouettes and create their own, but take it further.  On the inside of the portrait, students illustrate their "inner world"; on the outside, they illustrate their "outer world".  While working, students contemplate the differences between their mind, perception, and the world around them to create unique and expressive artwork that connects with a historic tradition of art-making.
