Faces of Dyslexia

Mission

Statistics reveal that 1 in 6 people have dyslexia- a neurological difference in how the brain connects and combines letters, sounds, and numbers.  Numbers tell us that 85% percent of students labeled with a learning disability have a primary disability in reading and language processing. But what is the story behind these numbers?  Faces of Dyslexia goes beyond the bar graphs and pie charts.  Our purpose is to explore the strengths and challenges individuals with dyslexia embrace.  We want to undo the stereotypes that occur when large groups of people are identified only as a number.  What are the vibrant contributions these community members make through their differences?  We celebrate neurodiversity and hope you will join us in learning about the faces of dyslexia and in sharing your own story.

The Project
Over the course of several months, photographs and collected the stories of individuals around the community who have dyslexia were collected by students who then collaged the photographs onto signs.  We publicly installed these art pieces around the community in the summer of 2013.  QR codes on each photograph will send people to a blog so they can learn the story behind each portrait. This blog will also feature stories, articles, and other information about dyslexia and related learning differences.

The School
Pinnacle School is a nonprofit school serving children K-12 with learning differences including dyslexia. For 30 years, the school has taught and encouraged students to become effective and productive citizens. The school places a high emphasis on the arts and sciences and focus on the strengths of its bright students.
