Summary:

Using artist Diego Rivera and the big idea of justice, students explored the complex issues of migrant workers in the United States.  Reading the book,  “Return to Sender” by Julia Alvarez, students got a feel for what migrant workers went through as they moved into this country.  They discussed what freedom and justice meant to them and wrote essays.  In art, students were inspired by Diego Rivera’s murals to bring up issues facing a group of people and communicating that through visual media.   Students planned and created monochromatic images about their understanding of justice and painted them on quilt square to add to a large class flag quilt. Students explored the concepts of Area and Perimeter to figure out how to build the quilt, and also cut and measure the correct size for each square.
